On Sunday the people of Ugborodo community in Warri South-West Local Government Area announced an end to the prolonged crisis against Chevron Nigeria Limited and made room for peace.

Ugborodo said their move will only be achieved if the seven days ultimatum given to the shell in regards to the Petroleum Industry Act is followed.

The conclusion was made after a general meeting held at the community’s town hall in Ode-Ugborodo with chiefs like Chief Ayirimi Emami of Warri Kingdom, Eghare Daniel Uwawah, the Eghare-Aja of Ugborodo community, Prince Perry Atete and a section of Ugborodo indigenes present.

After the meeting, Mr Alex Eyengho a community leader in Ugborodo spoke with journalists about why the community suspended the protest against Chevron.

He said after the last protest, Ugborodo has had several meetings with CNL and the company is showing commitment in regards to PIA.

Eyengho added that during the recent protest by the community, they demanded CNL to provide electricity, water, empowerment and job opportunities for indigenes and CNL has made commitments to attend to their demands.

The community leader pointed out that after the general meeting of Ugborodo, a seven-day notice was issued to Shell Petroleum Development Company which also operates in the community to come and negotiate with them directly just as CNL is doing.

He further added that should SPDC fail to heed their demands, then the Ugborodo community will do what is right within the law and go for a peaceful protest against the oil company.
