After its independence from South Africa in 1990, Namibia has voted in its first female president, 72-year-old Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, to rule the mineral-rich country.

Nandi-Ndaitwah, who was the nation’s Vice President from the ruling South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) party, swept the opposition party Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) candidate Panduleni Itula with 57 percent of the votes.

On Tuesday, the election authority announced the VP president despite disputes from the November 27 election.
