The weekend was filled with excitement from the victory of the women’s basketball team during the African Women’s Championship.

D’Tigress on Saturday, August 5, 2023, defeated Senegal in Kigali, Rwanda, to retain their FIBA Afrobasket Championship title with 84 points against their counterparts.

Rendering praises to the Nigerian girls that have won the title for the 4th time, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a tweet said the team has made Nigerians proud.

“I congratulate our very own D’Tigress #tigressNG for a well-deserved fourth consecutive Afrobasket Women Championship. We are proud of you,” he tweets.

Also the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, through its Permanent Secretary, Ismaila Abubakar, said: “Saturday’s victory by D’Tigress is historic especially as the team waited for 12 solid years with no title to show for their efforts. D’Tigress ended the drought as they were crowned champions in 2017. ”

Still, in the spirit of basketball, Nigeria will be hosting the Paris 2024 Olympic Games men’s basketball qualifiers with other countries like Senegal, Mali, Uganda, Congo Democratic Republic, Cameroun, Guinea, Tunisia, and host, Nigeria.
