NCDC Warns Nigerians of Chikungunya Mosquito Disease

Post created on 3:33 pm

‎The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has asked Nigerians to be on alert over Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne viral infection spreading very quickly across countries.

‎Citizens are advised to wear long-sleeved clothing during the daytime, as the mosquito is primarily active in the early hours of the morning and afternoon. The use of mosquito repellent and nets is also encouraged.

‎NCDC revealed that the disease has not been reported this year in Nigeria, but it is spreading rapidly in other countries like China; hence the call for awareness.

‎Chikungunya is transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, which are the same mosquitoes that carry Yellow Fever and Dengue. The disease is characterized by severe joint pains, sudden fever, muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, and rash.

‎However, the NCDC, in its post on X, noted that the disease is not fatal but can cause prolonged joint pain for months. Therefore, with the high rate of flooding, citizens are urged to protect themselves and report any cases immediately.
