Babafemi Oba, the recently posted Controller, Correction Centre, Delta State Command, has appealed to the State Government to provide measures to ensure offenders of the law do not go back to their old ways when released from correctional centres.

Oba appealed that the prerogative of mercy be brought back to the system to help with speedy dispensation of justice and decongesting the prisons

The Controller made the appeal while on a courtesy visit to the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Isaiah Bozimo.

He commended the efforts of the Attorney and the Ministry towards establishing a cordial working relationship with the state correctional centres, asking that more prison space be built as the ones available are filled beyond its capacity.

He further disclosed that the Warri custodial centre which is meant to accommodate 306 inmates, is accomodating 1020 inmates, as that of Ogwashi-Uku is also affected, noting some challenges facing the correctional centres as; limited number of vehicles, unavailability of power supply, limited prison space, amongst other

The state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Isaiah Bozimo while responding to his plea said the Ministry has increased the efficiency of the trial process from 6 weeks to 11 days to minimise the duration of time an accused person is held in a custodial centre.

Bozimo said the introduction of technological measures in court system via a video link between correctional centres and the court will help to manage the challenge of logistics faced by custodial centres in the state.
