An Abuja High Court sitting in Maitama, had on  Wednesday granted bail to the former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele who has been in detention for months.

The court, in a ruling that was delivered by Justice Olukayode Adeniyi, ordered that Emefiele be released to his lawyers.

The judge held, “There must be an end to detention without trial” stressing that it was the refusal of the Economic and Financial and Crimes Commission, EFCC, to comply with the order the court made on November 2, that led to the ruling.

The court held that Emefiele could no longer be held in custody owing to the claim that the federal government would arraign him on a fresh charge on November 15.

Justice Adeniyi also held that there were conflicting dates of FG lawyers on when the suspended CBN boss will be arraigned, including the fact that Emefiele has been in detention for 151 days without trials.

The court therefore ordered Emefiele be released to his lawyers and returned to court any other day he is required to appear in court.

Emefiele was directed to surrender all his international documents to the most senior registrar of the court, pending his arraignment.

The case was adjourned to November 17 for further proceedings.
