Ghana Rejects South Africa President’s Visit

With the xenophobic attacks and the march against African migrants in South Africa, which have led to the loss of lives and property, the state visit of President Cyril Ramaphosa to Ghana has been rejected.
The Ghanaian government has returned 1,000 nationals, with another 900 set to register for repatriation. This has severed diplomatic relations, as Ghanaians accuse South Africans of murdering 40-year-old Bashiru Isak during the March for March on June 30.
The circumstances surrounding Isak’s death have been disputed by South Africa and the Justice Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi, who stated that Ghana’s perception of the incident was misleading and risked creating a negative perception of South Africa.
However, Ramaphosa’s state visit to Ghana cannot proceed because diplomatic sources in Accra and Pretoria indicate that the visit could trigger hostile reactions from the public, a risk Accra is not willing to take.
