Federal Government Settles 2026 Academic Tools Allowance for Tertiary Institutions

The Federal Government has completed the full payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) to academic staff across all federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Covering the period from January to August 2026, the disbursement marks a significant step toward improving operational support and stabilizing the academic calendar across Nigeria’s public tertiary institutions.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, confirmed the official payout on Wednesday in Abuja following the formal inauguration of the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation. Designed to directly fund essential instructional tools, digital resources, and specialized research materials, the allowance aims to enhance teaching efficiency and scholarly productivity across federal institutions nationwide.

According to Dr. Alausa, the timely release of funds aligns directly with the terms outlined in the landmark 2025 Federal Government–Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) agreement. He emphasized that the administration remains dedicated to fulfilling its contractual obligations with university unions to prevent avoidable industrial actions and maintain labor harmony across campuses.

Addressing wider labor concerns within the higher education ecosystem, the minister assured public sector workers that non-academic staff would receive their corresponding entitlements shortly. He disclosed that financial processing for administrative and technical personnel is currently underway to ensure equitable disbursement across all university cadres.

Education analysts view the development as a positive signal of improved fiscal management within the education sector.
