President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), about one year after he took over the leadership of the regional bloc.

He was unanimously endorsed as the chairman during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority, Heads of States ECOWAS on Sunday held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja with member states present.

Tinubu’s tenure has been marked by significant challenges, particularly military coups in member states such as Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea.

Following his re-endorsement, Tinubu immediately appointed the President of Senegal, Bassirou Faye and the President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbé, to help speak with Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic to return to the regional bloc.

Recalled that the military junta leaders in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have firmly rejected rejoining the West Africa bloc despite sanctions lifted.

The three Sahel nations accused the leadership of ECOWAS of being influenced by foreign powers and stated that they would create an alliance that would be of the people instead.
