A tragedy occurred on Sunday at the Oghara-Benin highway as no fewer than 20 persons were burnt to death after a tanker carrying petrol product exploded.

Information gathered that the petrol tanker fell Saturday, September 30, at the ever-busy Koko junction due to the bad condition of the road and by Sunday, October 1, lives and properties have been destroyed.

Sources said the explosion was a result of residents scooping the spilt fuel and a spark came from a faulty vehicle which later caused the inferno.

According to an eyewitness account, residents of the area were advised by drivers and security men not to go close to the scene but they were adamant about the warning.

Another witness who identified himself as Yusuf also said, “We tried to prevent them but the youths threatened to beat us up telling us it’s their community. They came in their numbers carrying all sorts of containers and when the explosion happened around 12:15 am this morning we all fled.

“You can see dead bodies on the ground, some of them ran into the forest as I speak some dead bodies have been removed, I counted over 20 bodies.”
