Nigeria Sex Workers Beg for Better Treatment

Just like Brazil, which has set laws to protect sex workers, the Nigeria Sex Workers Association (NSWA) has also appealed to authorities to protect their members nationwide from abuse and harassment.
The grievances of NSWA were revealed in a statement by the National Coordinator, Amaka Enemo, on Tuesday, highlighting that the rate at which sex workers are being exploited by clients, law enforcement officials, and reckless extortion is detrimental to their members.
Enemo stated that sex workers are often seen as criminals, but they are normal individuals whose rights have been trampled upon; therefore, they should be protected from violence.
According to her, their absolute safety and well-being contribute to the overall health of communities and help to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
Enemo, however, urged that measures should be implemented effectively to safeguard their members from further harm.
