Military seize power in Burkina Faso

The military in Burkina Faso says it has seized power and overthrown President Roch Kaboré, during an announcement on television by an army officer.

Mr kaboré whereabouts are unclear, but the officer said that all those detained were in a secure location.

The coup happen a day after military seized barracks with several gunshots at the capital, Ouagadougou

On Sunday, a statement was issued by a group Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration or MPSR in french “Mr Kaboré had failed to unite the nation and deal with security crisis, which now threatens the nation.”

The troop demanded the sacking of military chiefs and more resources to fight militants linked to the Islamic State (IS) group and al-Qaeda.

The statement said parliament and government had been dissolved, and the constitution suspended, but promised a “return to constitutional order” within a “reasonable time”. The military also announced the closure of Burkina Faso’s borders.
