The past few years have been plagued by military coups, and Guinea-Bissau has not been exempted. On Wednesday, while others were waiting for the announcement of presidential results, a coup shut down the nation, involving Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan, and other dignitaries.

In a bid to rescue Guinea-Bissau, a virtual emergency meeting via Zoom was held with present, along with other Heads of State and the Government Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Thursday.

The military, however, following the coup, arrested President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and announced General Horta Nta Na Man as the new head of a transitional government for one year.
