The dangers of exposed drainage systems across Asaba, especially during the rainy season, pose a great risk, with many residents calling for control measures to prevent occurrences like the recent death of a 9-year-old boy, Chukwuemeka Emmanuel, who was swept away by floodwaters during heavy rainfall around Redeem Junction on Okpanam Road.

On Monday, social activist Harrison Gwamnishu raised concerns about a missing child on Facebook and urged residents around Anwai Road and nearby communities to search drainage channels, culverts, and waterways for the boy.

Giving an update on Tuesday, August 4, Gwamnishu confirmed that Emmanuel had been found dead after he was pulled from the floodwaters and rushed to a hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.

According to sources, the little boy was carried by the floodwaters from the Redeem Road/Okpanam Road axis, but the body was recovered near the Asaba International Airport.
