Five communities in the riverine area of Warri North LGA have been flooded by water, says Kenren Pere, the councilor representing the people of Ogbinbiri Ward 18 in Asigborodo.

He told journalists on Monday that the affected communities are Torukubuagbene, Awanba, Koropigbene, Itagbene, Asigborodo, and some other adjourning communities.

Pere said the flood started over a week ago and got worse on Friday, “I cannot attribute the course to flooding or the heavy torrential downpour that has been happening in recent times, though the rain has been falling before, but we have not had it so bad like this. Many valuables, including local boats, clothes, food items, and other means of livelihood, have been destroyed by the unfortunate occurrence.

“Lives are at stake. People can no longer go about their normal daily activities to feed, so there is hunger in the affected communities. The overflow started more than a week ago, but the situation became worse three days ago, leaving my people in fear.”

The councilor also sent a message to the governor of the state, Sheriff Oborewori to send items that will help in alleviating the suffering of the people.

The director of administration and finance at the Delta Emergency Management Agency, Daniel Okpor, said the agency was unaware of the development but further investigations will help to know the way forward.

“Was the incident a result of flood or rainfall? We believe more in video than in photographs. In the absence of video, you can send me photographs,” he said.
