Explosion kills 17, injures 59 in Ghana

An explosion has occurred in western Ghana on Thursday from a truck that collided with a motorcycle, causing great loss of lives and property according to Ghanaian president Nana Akufo-Addo’s tweet.

In a statement released overnight by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said a total of 17 people have been confirmed dead from the explosion and 59 others injured.

The accident happened at Apiate near the city of Bogoso close to the capital Accra at noon.

A statement released by the Local police said an investigation revealed that the explosion was caused by a mining vehicle carrying explosives which collided with a motorcycle. Meanwhile, some of the victims have been taken to various hospitals.

At Apiate hospital, Dr Joseph Darko, told AFP that they have attended to five casualties including a five year old child who is in a critical state.

Villages, schools and churches around have been asked to open their premises to accommodate casualties. More police have been deployed to the accident scene and people near the blast were asked to move to neighboring villages.
