Chairman of Oshimili North Local Government Council, Innocent Esewenze, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting communities in the local government area with affordable food items.

Esewenze who was speaking at the flag-off of the subsidy market for the people of Ebu Community in the local government area, noted that food price inflation in Nigeria had made feeding difficult for most families in the country.

He pointed out that it was for this reason that his administration mooted the idea of the subsidy market scheme where people in communities in the area would buy food items and pay only 50 per cent of the cost of such item through a food voucher while the local government council pays the remaining 50 per cent of the food items.

According to him, the gesture was aimed at promoting access to affordable food items, adding that no community in the local government area would be left out in the subsidy market scheme.

Meanwhile, the Executive Assistant to the governor on Public Enlightenment, Projects and Policies, Olisa Ifeajika, said in the Council Chairman’s consciousness to do what is right for the people, he came up with the idea of a subsidy market, even when the subsidy market was not mentioned in his manifesto.

Ifeajika stated that the idea came as the administration of Esewenze progressed in office after doing needs assessment of the people based on current economic realities in the country.

While saying that it is ‘food o’clock’ in Oshimili North, he pointed out that the Chairman of the local government was passionately committed to the welfare of the people in the area in line with the MORE Agenda of the Oborevwori’s administration in the state.

The 15 food items that were sold at the subsidy market included crates of eggs, palm oil, meat, noodles, spaghetti, tomatoes, crayfish, fish, egusi (melon), ogbono, rice, beans, tubers of yam, garri and vegetable oil.
