Following the arraignment by the Nigerian Police against human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi for allegedly defaming the character of Aare Afe Babalola (SAN) in his book titled Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, the activist has been remanded in a correctional facility.
The judgment was given by the presiding Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, that Farotimi is to remain in custody until December 10.
The 16-count charges labeled against the lawyer by the police prosecutor, Samson Osun, called for a remand until after the investigation, but Farotimi, however, pleaded not guilty.
While the counsel for Farotimi argued that the case was bailable until proven guilty, as his client would not pose a threat to society regarding his public figure, this was not honored by the magistrate.
