Court of Appeal Upheld Rivers LGA Election

Post created on 9:19 am

The judgment by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja criticizing the October 5 election conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has been nullified by the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

The Federal High Court had also barred INEC from releasing the voters’ register to RSIEC during the local government polls and restricted security operatives from the election process.

However, in a panel led by Justice Onyekachi Otisi, it was stated that the lower court lacked jurisdiction according to the laid-down principles of the Electoral Act; the lower court cannot cover elections conducted by states but only those conducted by the federal government, governorship elections, and elections in the FCT.
