The government of Gabon, led by General Brice Oligui Nguema, has placed a ban on all social media in the nation late Tuesday night.
The suspension was announced by Gabon’s media regulator, stating that online content has been fueling division through false information; hence, the ban is in effect until further notice.
In a televised statement on Tuesday evening, the High Authority for Communication (HAC) spokesperson, Jean-Claude Mendome, emphasized cyberbullying, unauthorized disclosure of personal data, and other issues.
Currently, the information does not specify which social media platforms are to be suspended, but WhatsApp, Facebook, and TikTok are the most popular in Gabon.
