A standing order was given by the speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly that 100 orphanage girls who lost their parents to bandits attack at Mariga LGA should be set for marriages.

Speaker of the House, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, said it was a way of alleviating the suffering of these young girls in his constituency as the grooms will be assisted with the pride price payment and other necessary things for the mass marriage.

However, countering the supposed mass marriage which would be held on May 24, the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun to stop the speaker from carrying out such a project.

At a press briefing in Abuja, Mrs Kennedy-Ohanenye said the investigation has begun into the case and the ministry is seeking a court injunction to stop the speaker.

Her emphasis was also on the ages of the girls, and why wanting to marry them out, amongst other questions.

Those are questions the ministry tends to ask the House Speaker before such marriages are conducted, knowing they can be sent to school or empowered with different skills
