Woman Dies 7 Days Later After Waking Up From Coffin

A 76-year-old woman in Ecuador, Bella Montoya who woke up inside a coffin during her wake has died seven days after being in hospital.

The Ecuadorian surprised guests during her wake after they heard her knocking inside the coffin earlier this month but she died on Friday after a week of intensive care.

Montoya was a retired nurse who was declared dead by doctors after she suffered a stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest but the Ecuador health ministry said the woman could not respond to resuscitation efforts, hence declared dead.

Hours after she was declared dead by doctors, Montoya’s family gathered for a wake at a funeral home on June 9 but was shocked by the sound coming out from the coffin.

The Son of the woman, Gilberto Barbera, told Associated Press how everyone was frightened to the bone,  that his mother’s condition became urgent and she was immediately returned to the hospital.

Montoya was however confirmed dead by doctors on Friday evening according to the Barbera and has been taken to the funeral home where she regained consciousness to be buried in a public cemetery.

The health ministry disclosed that Montoya died from an ischemic stroke, but didn’t disclose the investigation surrounding the case.

Montoya’s sister had also filed a formal complaint about the incident and is hoping to find out the doctor who had declared her sister dead.
