I’d rather stay in a country where its economy is not and be celebrated than be in a place where I am seen as a nobody.

These were the words of Femi Brainard who left the Nollywood industry and ventured into cab driving after his relocation to the United States of America.

Speaking on a podcast with comedian Teju Oyelakin, aka Teju Babyface, Femi recounted how he had to struggle to pay bills and put food on his family’s table, which pushed him into being a taxi driver.

He said when Nigerian passengers saw him driving a taxi they kept wondering if he was the Femi Brainard that they all knew in Nollywood years back.

The actor added that his wife never liked the idea of relocating abroad and he had to do menial jobs to see that their bills could be paid.

His words: “At times it would be so hard, I won’t have money at hand. One day I went to the apartment parking lot and cried. I brought this woman here, and I have to feed her, since abroad don’t recognize stars.

“As difficult as Nigeria seems to be, I would rather be a prince and a celebrity in a system that is not working than come to this place and be a nobody. I am still bothered about rent.” Femi said.
