The Nigeria Labour Union, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC under the umbrella of Organized Labour, commenced their planned strike today to press home their demand for workers’ welfare and the new national minimum wage.

The federal government had failed to meet the demands of the union after several negotiations, insisting that the strike was not necessary at this point.

During a meeting held on Sunday with the Union to shelve the planned strike, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and representatives of the Green House revealed that they were members of Labour.

Pleading with the union, the Speaker said he knows the negotiations have taken much time but strike action should be laid aside as it will cripple things in the nation.

Recall that the Federal Government had pegged the minimum wage on N60,000 but President of NLC, Joe Ajearo and Festus Osifo of TUC had insisted on N494,000.
