Uganda has swung into the trend of sweeping their nation of immigrants who are not legally documented, and 231 persons have been arrested by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, with 62 of them being Nigerians.
The majority of illegal immigrants from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Cambodia, and Malaysia are living and working in Uganda without proper documentation.
The suspects were arrested at various locations in Kampala, the nation’s capital, on April 27, 2026, following a tip-off to the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control.
The spokesperson of the immigration ministry, Simon Peter Mundeyi, said some of the Nigerians came into the country under the guise of preaching the gospel but committed various crimes. Others claimed they were trafficked into Uganda with promises of employment, while some are directly involved in cybercrimes.
The government urged landlords to request documentation before admitting a foreign national to an apartment, as illegal immigrants will be prosecuted under Ugandan law.
