A new order of government has been passed by the Togolese lawmakers, transitioning the West African nation from a Presidential system of government to a Parliamentary system.

The vote was unanimously agreed on Monday by 89 lawmakers that the president will no longer be the choice of the public but that of lawmakers without any debate.

The new law puts it that the president will serve for a one-time six year term and no longer the maximum two term of five years.

In less than a month to Togo’s next election, it is still unclear if this new law which was backed by lawmakers from the Union of the Republic ruling party will be fully implemented.
