A statement released by the military government of Niger Republic on Tuesday evening revealed that 21 soldiers were brutally killed by a terrorist group operating at the county’s border with Burkina Faso.

In a televised statement, the junta government did not specify which group was behind the ambush attack.

A rebel group identified as Patriotic Liberation Front led by Salah Mahmoud, last week launched an attack on a China-backed pipeline project worth $400 million and threatened more attacks if the deal was not cancelled.

Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have been battling attacks by the Islamic State extremist group for years.
