Survivors of the Elite 5-Star Hostel, which contains 60 rooms in Amaokpala, near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, are recounting moments before the tragedy on Sunday, July 26, that has left two dead.
One of the survivors, Grace Nweke, revealed that at about 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, a food vendor in the building alerted residents through their WhatsApp group that the walls of the hostel were cracking, but it wasn’t taken seriously until a loud cracking sound was heard and people were scrambling for safety.
Grace said she moved into the hostel in January 2026 and had no idea of the unsafe structure but learned later that the previous occupants had allegedly been directed to vacate the building because of its deteriorating condition. However, the caretaker went ahead to rent the premises to unsuspecting students.
The two bodies recovered so far are a male and a female; however, the female victim has been identified by friends as Vivian Chinedum, a baker and a recent graduate of the Department of Food Science and Technology at Federal Polytechnic, Oko. She moved into the hostel in March 2026.
