President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has withdrawn some names allegedly connected with crimes, trafficking, drugs, and murder from the pardon list due to various criticisms, including that of Mariam Sanda, who killed her husband.
The reversal of the presidential list has followed backlash both online and offline, as some see the move as unfair, especially since Nigerians have raised their voices about issues like fuel subsidy, tax, and other policies, but the government has not taken action.
Speaking about the pardon list reversal last night after the list was released by Bayo Onunaga, legal practitioner and public affairs analyst Frank Tietie bluntly faulted President Bola Tinubu, stating that once a pardon is signed, it cannot be withdrawn.
Tiete, on Arise News, described the President’s action as unconstitutional, emphasising that the power of pardon, once exercised, cannot be undone, noting that a listening President would have reconsidered his actions when Nigerians cried about the economy therefore, the law states that the president cannot convict or re-convict anyone after granting them a pardon.
However, Mary Sanda and others previous pardoned is now reviewed and sentence reduced to 12 years though she had earlier spent 6 years in prison.
