No fewer than 250 shops and business premises at the Eziukwu Road Market in Aba, Abia State have been shut down by operatives of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) in an ongoing operation against producers of suspected fake products.

The operation which started on Monday, December 11, had on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, sealed over 250 shops, and arrested 10 persons involved in the production of fake consumer items ranging from wines, elite spirit drinks, and beverages of all kinds.

Speaking with the media on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of South East region, called for the temporary closure of the Eziukwu Road market to facilitate a hitch-free operation by the agency.

“We have written to the Abia State government on the need for the market to be closed, while the operation lasts.

We want a conducive atmosphere for the ongoing operation, “Ilyomade stated.

The operation also made the concerned society group in South-East call for a stiffer law against those perpetrating the act of producing and distributing fake products across the country.

Charles Chinekezi and Comrade Goodluck Ibem, Chairman of Civil Liberties Organization, CLO, Aba Unit and President-General Coalition of South East Youths Leaders, COSEYL said it has become imperative for a death penalty to be passed by the National Assembly to serve as punishment for any deterrent.

They added that what the adulterators are doing is a crime against humanity.

“They are silently killing millions, including unborn children. Most pregnant women consume these counterfeit products and in turn the unborn babies are affected,” Prof Chinekezi and Comrade Ibem chorused.
