The change of name and reshuffle of ministers in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which also affected the Ministry of Niger Delta Development Commission to the Ministry for Regional Development, brought a decision by the House of Representatives for the Presidency to reconsider.
The motion was initially sponsored by PDP member Oboku Oforji from Bayelsa State but was later stepped down by the House, saying that other events had overtaken it.
According to Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, his meeting with President Tinubu last week gave an assurance that the South-South Development Commission Bill will take care of specific issues concerning the Niger Delta Region; therefore, the House should step down on the motion.
The lawmakers and House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, APC, Edo, reassured that the conversion of the Niger Delta Development Ministry to that of Ministry of Regional Development will not in any way deny the Niger Delta region of its due development, nor reduce its impact but just a medium to broaden its scope, stretching development to other regions.
