Searching has begun in Malawi after a military helicopter carrying Vice President, Saulos Chilima and nine others on board went missing on Monday.

According to President Lazarus Chakwera the former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri, 51-year-old Chilima and eight others left Lilongwe the capital to attend the burial of a former government official but after 45 minutes the helicopter did not land at the Mzuzu International Airport.

Soldiers are now searching the forest in the Northern Malawi region after the plane went missing on Monday.

Showing his concern, President Chakwera said the air traffic control told the pilot not to land but to turn around due to bad weather conditions but a few minutes later they lost contact with the aircraft as it disappeared from the radar.

Chakwera asked Malawians to keep praying for all those onboard and their families.
