Insecurity: Jos Women Form Vigilante Group

Women in Jos Plateau State have taken the security of their communities seriously to confront violence, theft, and drug-related crimes.

The group comprises Christians and Muslim young women teaming up as a vigilante to combat crime amid the rising insecurity that has plagued the once peaceful state in Nigeria.

Speaking to Reuters, the leader of the group, Blessing Ngozi Emmanuel, said the new outfit has brought together women who are willing to sacrifice their comfort for the safety of their children and communities due to the repeated failures of government security promises.

They conduct nightly patrols between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., focusing on areas they consider most vulnerable to crime.

However, their work has not come without risks, as some members have reportedly been injured during operations, while others have received threats.

Despite the dangers, Emmanuel stressed that the women have insisted their mission is strictly to support community security, not to replace formal law enforcement, expressing the lack of official recognition or support.
