On Thursday, August 29, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced that from September 1, 2025, a 32-page passport valid for five years will now cost N100,000, while a 64-page passport with a validity of 10 years will be N200,000.

The announcement brought different views and heavy criticism from the public, but the Federal Government has defended the NIS for their decision to implement an upward review.

Speaking on the issue on X on Friday, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu, Temitope Ajayi, said Nigerians have long paid even more through unofficial means to fast-track the process; hence, the review aims to uphold the quality and integrity of the passport.

Despite the growing public anger, the new fees only apply to applications in Nigeria, as passports abroad still remain $150 and $230 each.
