With the recent collapse of buildings across states in Nigeria, a call was made for an investigation into the cause and the Committee on Steel Development at the House of Representatives has shifted the blame to fake iron rods imported into the country.

Various stakeholders have been called on following the outcome of the investigation to see an end to the evil manipulation carried out in the building industry.

While addressing the issue on Wednesday in Abuja during the Nigerian Society of Engineers meeting, Chairman of the Committee, Zainab Gimba, revealed that there have been recent manipulations in iron rods as the one for 10 mm was discovered to be 7.56 mm, while that of 12 mm was 9.25mm and 16 mm came out as 11.25mm.

The chairman said substandard rods are imported daily into the county, and supervising agencies are doing nothing much to address the problem.

With the committee set, Gimba assured a full investigation and any offender caught will be dealt with according to the provisions of the law.
