E-Transmission/Manual Backup Still Stands — Senate

Despite the uproar and shouting, the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday again approved the electronic transmission of election results, with manual collation retained as a backup for the 2027 general elections.

The conclusion came after a heated argument ensued among 14 lawmakers, along with Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe, who opposed the controversial 2026 bill, but 55 senators voted to retain the manual backup clause.

The Red House had earlier passed the bill but revisited it again following concerns about discrepancies in the bill and the timetable released by INEC for the elections.

With the bill passed, it simply means that election results will be electronically uploaded to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV); there will also be manual documentation at polling units in places where internet services fail.
