A one-month-old baby has been rescued by the Anambra State Police Command following the arrest of a yet-to-be-identified couple.

The couple were trafficking the baby to Anambra State after a payment of N30,000 was made to the infant’s mother in the Ajah area of Lagos State.

Operatives of the Nigerian police caught the couple with the baby at Niger bridge while on a journey in a luxury bus on Sunday.

Confirming the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ikenga Tochukwu, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Anambra State Police Command, disclosed that the police promptly rescued the baby and handed the child over to the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Children Welfare for proper care.

The PPRO also added that the couple are now being handled by the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigations.

According to the police spokesperson, the discovery and subsequent arrest came about when a fellow passenger in the luxury bus alerted the police via the command’s Control Room hotline.

The informant expressed suspicions that the couple was carrying a baby who might not belong to them, cause it had been crying for food but the supposed mother was not able to breastfeed it.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, commended the vigilant citizen whose alertness and concern facilitated the rescue of the child.

He also praised the dedication and vigilance displayed by the police operatives in swiftly addressing the situation.
