There is a new high risk short SMS malware and TangleBot infecting Android mobile devices. This is a public call made by Nigeria Communications Commission to Nigerians.
This new TangleBot uses similar tactics as FlutBot SMS Android malware with it’s target at Android devices to gain control of the device.
TangleBot can be installed when user clicks on wrong link disguised as COVID-19 vaccination appointment or fake power outage related in an SMS.
According to NCC the aim of either message is to encourage victims to follow a link that will give them more details. On the suppose page, users are asked to update Adobe Flash Player to view the page content by going through nine dialogue boxes which give acceptance to different permission, which will then allow the malware operators to initiate the configuration of malware process.
The consequences of TangleBot is that it immediately gains access to different permission when installed on a device to eavesdrop on users communication, by using the malware to steal and monitor other information such as camera , audio conversation, location, etc.
The malware then takes complete control of the device including banking data, and even the deepest part of the Android system.
NCC furthermore, urged telecom users to be aware of this cyber criminals and their wiles. Consumers and other internet users should refrain from opening URLs from unknown sources when using their devices.
