Asagba Seeks Collaboration with Delta Govt on Fight Against Drug Abuse

Director-General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communication, Fred Latimore has commended the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Epiphany Azinge, for inaugurating the Asaba Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation Committee, as a measure from the palace to tackle the issue of drug abuse in the state capital.

Latimore who gave the commendation when he received members of the Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation Committee in his office in Asaba, pledged the Bureau’s commitment in collaborating with the Asaba Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation Committee and other stakeholders, towards amplifying the sensitization campaign and making a meaningful impact in communities across the state.

He said drug abuse, especially among youths, was particularly concerning, as it could lead to addiction, mental health problems, and even death, adding that in Delta State, cases had been seen of young persons whose lives had been ruined by substance abuse pointing out that the consequences of drug abuse were far-reaching, affecting not only the individual but also their families, communities and the larger society.

Earlier the Chairman of the Asaba Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation Committee, Luke Anyanwu, the Ojemba of Asaba, represented by one of the members of the committee, Obi Nwanyi Adanma Ajufoh, said the goal of the committee was to save countless lives affected by drug abuse in villages that state government couldn’t reach.

She expressed the committee’s readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders in educating people in rural areas about the dangers of drug abuse, aiming to make a positive impact on their lives.

Also, the State Commander of the NDLEA, Halilu Habibu, represented by his Deputy, Victor Isibor, emphasized that guiding children against drug abuse was a shared responsibility, and advised parents to play active roles in raising their children towards the right path, noting that in the first half of 2025 alone, NDLEA Delta Command seized over 1,000 kilograms of assorted drugs and arrested nearly 600 suspects.
