Tension As Police Teargas Protesting Pensioners In Lagos

Protesting pensioners who gathered at the Lagos State government premises to press their demands and seek government intervention in addressing their welfare have been teargassed by the Nigerian police force.

The pensioners, under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Contributory Pension Scheme, were demanding that the government pay outstanding pension arrears and other benefits they said were owed, as well as the implementation of the approved pension increase and wage awards in Ikeja when police officers fired tear gas at them, forcing some to disperse.

Tension increased as the retirees expressed their dissatisfaction with the use of force against them while demanding the payment of their entitlements.
