3.5m Social Media Accounts Shut Down by FG

More than 13,597,057 social media accounts belonging to Nigerian users have reportedly been shut down by the Federal Government for publishing content that violated the Code of Practice 2024.
Offensive content was taken down from various platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) following a report submitted by Google, Microsoft, and TikTok in compliance with the code of practice of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
A statement by NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, revealed that a total of 58,909,112 offensive contents were pulled down from various platforms, 754,629 complaints were registered by users during the period, while 420,439 contents were taken down and later reinstated following successful appeals.
