Young Man Kidnapped Himself, Demands Ransom From Parents

‎Four suspects, Chidera Godwin Ako (21), Okechukwu Philip Chidalu (19), Ifeanyi Ugwu (20), and Ossai Chigozie (35), have been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command for conspiracy and staging a kidnapping.

‎The suspects were arrested on May 24, 2025, by operatives attached to the Nsukka Sector of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad after a complaint was made by Chidera’s parents.
‎
‎It was discovered that the kidnapping of Chidera was only a plot by him to extort money from his parents. On May 4, his phone was used to contact his parents and send a video of him being tortured with a gun as the group demanded a ransom of N10 million.
‎
‎Distressed and concerned for their child, the parents of Chidera made an initial payment of N1.5 million on May 22, but he was not released, and an additional N500,000 was sent.
‎
‎All four suspects, including an ex-convict, were arrested at a POS center while trying to withdraw the ransom. A locally made single-barrel gun and two live cartridges were recovered from them.

‎The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, condemned the act and ordered further investigations, while the suspects will soon be charged in court.
