The Association in charge of supplying and selling tomatoes has made it clear that the Northern States would stop sending tomatoes to Lagos state due to a breakdown that occurred last week.

Late Wednesday, May 1, it was reported that a market ile-epo in the Alimosho area of Lagos State was set ablaze after a fracas ensued between a Yoruba man who won N60,000 bet from a Hausa betting shop, and the shop owner insisted that he would collect some money from the winner.

The winner however refused and said he would only give something of his volition, that was how the fight started and the Hausa man ran to his brothers for solace which then degenerated into the burning of shops.

Police and fire service men were restricted from entering the scene of the incident which led to the destruction of over 6,000 tomato crates according to the Tomatoes Crates Dealers Association of Nigeria which amounted to N360 million.

Briefing pressmen in an interview, National Chairman of the Association Alhaji Ahmed Alaramma who doubled as the National Secretary of Amalgamated Union of Foodstuffs and Cattle Dealers Nigeria, said those were rented crates that cost the members 6,000 to produce one.

According to Alaramma, he said the raffia basket earlier used was not favourable to the business which is why over 70 of their members hire the crates which are then returned for the next market.

He however noted that their lawyer has been briefed on the issue and urged the Federal Government and the Lagos State government to do the needful or face total cut off from the North.
