Vice President Kashim Shettima Arrives in New York for 81st UN General Assembly

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York, United States, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the ongoing 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Speaking upon arrival, Shettima affirmed that Nigeria’s strategic engagements throughout the global summit will be strictly guided by the nation’s primary national interests.

​The vice president landed alongside a high-level diplomatic delegation including Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, and other senior federal administrators.

​Upon arrival, Shettima was received by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President Sen. Ibrahim Hadejia, Foreign Affairs Minister Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim. Other senior officials present included Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim and Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake.

​Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to multilateral cooperation, Shettima emphasized the administration’s continued push for structural reforms within key global institutions, arguing that international bodies must evolve to better reflect modern global economic and demographic realities.

​As part of the official itinerary, Vice President Shettima is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national address during the General Debate, outlining the country’s foreign policy priorities and stance on pressing global challenges. Additionally, the delegation will participate in high-level multilateral forums and hold bilateral meetings with foreign heads of state, international organizations, and key development partners.
