Undergraduate Swept Away by Floodwaters in Asaba Found Dead Two Days Later

The body of a university undergraduate swept away by floodwaters along Okotimi Layout in Asaba, Delta State, has been recovered two days after the tragedy occurred.

​The fatal incident took place on Monday, September 21, 2026, behind the Asaba Specialist Hospital following severe seasonal downpours across the state capital.

​Eyewitness accounts indicate that the victim was travelling with her father in a Toyota Corolla, heading toward the venue of her Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) placement, when surging floodwaters overwhelmed the vehicle and swept it into a deep, overflowing drainage channel.

​Bystanders reported that the student, who was seated in the front passenger seat, gestured and called out for assistance before being drawn into the rapid current. Local rescuers managed to pull her father from the submerged vehicle; he was immediately transported to a medical facility where he is currently receiving treatment.

​Her body was retrieved by local search-and-rescue teams downstream on Wednesday.

​The tragedy highlights ongoing safety concerns surrounding urban drainage infrastructure in Asaba following recent high-volume rainfalls and flood advisories issued across the Niger Delta region.
