Concerns have been raised by a member of the House of Representatives over the extortion of motorists that ply the Onitsha-Enugu highway and the excessive number of checkpoints.

The motion was raised by Hon. Amobi Oga on Thursday during their plenary and was fully supported by the House after an adoption was made, calling on the security authorities to take appropriate action.

The resolution led to the lawmakers calling on security operatives to use their position to help the people and not the other way around by exploiting and harassing them.

Lawmakers noted that the mounting of excessive security checkpoints is reducing productivity and undermining the economic stability of the region.

Therefore, the joint Committees on Defence, Army, and Police Affairs are to dialogue with the Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police to explore alternative security strategies that will not subject people to undue hardship.

Also, the Committee on Road Safety and National Security has formed a Joint Committee to engage in dialogue with various heads to regulate the checkpoints on the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway.
