Nigerian business tycoon, Aliko Dangote has said that the time for him to acquire English football club, Arsenal FC has passed.
Dangote said this in an interview with Bloomberg stating that he does not “have that kind of excess liquidity to buy a club for $4 billion”.
He said “That time has passed. The last time when we had this interview, I told you that, yes, as soon I finish with the refinery, I’m going to try and buy Arsenal. But the issue is that everything has gone up, and the clubs, too, they are all doing very well.
“Arsenal is doing extremely well. That time, Arsenal was not doing very well. I do not have that kind of excess liquidity to buy a club for $4 billion, so to speak, and use it as a promotional something. I would rather do something else with the money.
“What I will do is continue to be the biggest fan of Arsenal. I watch their games any time they are playing. I will remain a major supporter of Arsenal, but I do not think it makes sense today to buy Arsenal. I regret not buying the club before but my money was more needed in completing my project than buying Arsenal.”
“I would have bought it for $2 billion but I would not have been able to finish my project. It’s either finish your project or go and buy Arsenal and I think the best decision was for us to go and complete our refinery….”
