277 cartons of fake and unregistered Malamal Fort anti-malaria drugs worth over N1.2 billion have been seized by the National Agency for Food Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
The drugs were hidden in a spare parts warehouse along Ilasa-Oshodi after being shipped in a container from China.
Revealing the matter to newsmen in Lagos on Thursday, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, said the operation was successful after personnel suspected foul play with the container and trailed it to the warehouse at Ilasa-Oshodi.
According to Iluyomade, the drug was concealed in a carton of Diclofenac Potassium enteric-coated 50mg and was manufactured by Shanxi Tianyuan Pharmaceuticals Group in China.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the person behind the importation of the fake drugs had relocated from Onitsha to China following a clampdown by NAFDAC at the Onitsha drug market.
