With the current situation of the Niger Republic overtaking the democratic government, airspace closed and land borders were locked after the two weeks coup d’etat.

The military coup soldiers have however named the country’s former economy minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine as the new prime minister.

This was made known on a national broadcast by the military, late Monday night.

According to a media report from Niger, Lamine Zeine was the minister of economy and finance under President Mamadou Tandja in 2010 before working as an economist with African Development Bank in Chad.

It will be recalled that the chairperson of the  Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS ) gave a one-week ultimatum to the coup soldiers to reinstate Bazoum.

This ultimatum which expired over the weekend has called for an emergency meeting of the ECOWAS states to meet on Thursday in Abuja.
