The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory commission(NERC) has said that landlords should not force outstanding bills of previous tenants on new tenants.

Mr. Nathan Shatti the NERC commissioner, finance and management services stated this on Tuesday in a live program.

The commissioner asked new tenants who are asked to pay outstanding bills of previous tenants to report to NERC as a court order barring landlords from imposing the outstanding bills on new tenants exists.

He said, “Landlord’s outstanding electricity bills cannot be enforced on a tenant. A judge recently ruled that the bills of a previous tenant cannot be enforced on a new customer. Send us details if you are in such a situation.
